We’ve already called out Gourmet Dumpling House as one of our favorite stops, but the dining options in Chinatown really warrant a post of their own. Melt-in-your-mouth dumplings, fresh seafood and noodles to die for are waiting. Check out some of the highlights, all within a stone’s throw of The Kensington.
Late Night. Although it may be best known for serving up soups well after the bars close, Chau Chow City is truly worth a visit any time of day. Come late, come early, come hungry. The clams in black bean sauce, spicy crispy beef and mayonnaise shrimp all make our favorites’ list. 83 Essex Street, 617-338-8158.
Dim Sum. The line of locals winding down the sidewalk on Sunday mornings is an indication of the meal you’ll enjoy at Winsor Dim Sum Café — well worth the wait. They’ve eschewed traditional rolling food carts for the freshest dim sum imaginable, delivered straight to your table while it’s still steaming. 10 Tyler Street. 617-338-1688.
Large Parties. Bring your crew to East Ocean City and enjoy fabulous, fresh seafood at the wide, round tables that are perfect for an evening get-together. The restaurant has plenty of staff on hand to keep things running smoothly and a huge menu to please the most particular palate. You’ll love the wine list, too. 25-29 Beach Street. 617-542-2504.
Taiwanese. Taiwan Café is widely known as one of the best restaurants in Chinatown. Enjoy delicious traditional dishes in a setting that’s casual and kid-friendly, but still great for date night. Check out the soups and the Taiwanese pork chops. 34 Oxford Street. 617-426-8181.
Food Truck. Boston’s food trucks have earned huge accolades — none more that Mei Mei Street Kitchen, which won Best Meal on Wheels from Boston magazine. Visit their Find Us page to see where Mei Mei is and when you can indulge in locally sourced novelties like ham-fried rice.
Whether you’re looking for dine-in or take-out, a quick bite or to linger over drinks, the Chinatown restaurant scene has lots to offer. Budget-friendly and always tasty — right down to the fortune cookies.
